FAQs

What is psychotherapy?
Therapy is a confidential process where a trained therapist helps you explore and navigate patterns of thought, emotion and behavior. Through therapy, you can expect to gain deeper insight into your past, present, conscious, unconscious, and the way in which you relate to the world around you.

Therapy can also help you recognize and overcome self - defeating patterns that may be coming in the way of reaching your potential or best self. Through this deeper understanding of the self, therapy can help you reach a more balanced version of yourself.
What type of method or approach do you use?
Our practice is not limited to one method or approach. We tailor therapy to meet the needs and goals of each individual and draw from various therapeutic models including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Narrative Therapy, Dance and Movement Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Psychodynamic Therapy, Mindfulness and Somatic Therapy.

We adopt a collaborative approach, where the therapist and client mutually agree upon goals that are to be worked on.
Who can benefit from therapy?
Put simply, anyone can benefit from therapy. If you are looking to make meaningful changes in your life in order to achieve greater life satisfaction, then therapy will be beneficial to you. If you are experiencing any degree of emotional distress, then therapy can be a helpful tool of support.

The belief that therapy is only for those who have “serious psychological or mental health concerns” is not true. You may even seek therapy to get to know yourself better.
How long will I have to be in therapy for?
Every individual has their own goals and concerns that they would like to work on, depending on which therapy can last from a few sessions to much longer. Some find therapy extremely beneficial and may choose to make it a long- term process.

Our experience and clinical research tells us that a minimum of 6-8 sessions are needed in order to start seeing a meaningful shift.
How often do I have to come in for therapy?
At the beginning of the therapy process, we recommend sessions once a week in order for you to get into the rhythm of the process as well as establish a trusting and safe therapeutic relationship. As progress is starting to be seen, the therapist and you can mutually decide to taper the frequency of sessions.

You are welcome to seek more frequent sessions if you are in crisis or want greater insight. This can be discussed with your therapist, who will help you explore this need and decide what may work best.
What does a typical session look like?
A typical misconception of therapy is the belief that the therapist only sits, listens and nods while the client is talking throughout the session. While reflective listening is an integral part of therapy, we also take on a much more interactive and collaborative role where we use various strategies to help you achieve your goal. These can range from talk therapy, art, dance, and journaling, to meditation, breathwork and behavioral exercises. Your therapist may give you things to do, or ponder upon between sessions. Your commitment to the process can usually determine how much you will benefit from therapy.

What is Coaching?
Coaching is a deeply honouring process where the coach holds a safe space for the client that allows them to give shape to their dream life or situation. It will allow the client to identify the gap between where they are right now in their life and where they would like to be. A growing number of individuals are turning to professional coaching for support in identifying and living out their vision and purpose so they can be the best versions of themselves. Partnering with a professional coach can unlock your potential and set you on the path to thriving personally and professionally.

As a coach, I use an enquiry method to help you understand yourself better so that you can move towards your desired goal.
How is coaching done?
The coaching relationship begins with a 2 hour Foundation session. This is the time when the client goes through a discovery process facilitated by the coach where both the client and coach establish what is important to the client. Ongoing weekly sessions are 1 hour in duration during which the client comes prepared with what they want out of the session. The coach helps the client discover their own answers and helps set up systems for support and accountability.
How is coaching different from other service professions?
  • Therapy: Typically a person would visit a therapist to process unresolved trauma or to change unhealthy patterns of thoughts and behaviours. Typically a person would visit a coach to solve for a gap between where they are in their life currently and where they would like to be. Coaching is a self directed process where the client chooses goals that they want to work on in a supportive environment.
  • Consulting: In consulting you are asking someone else for answers. The consultant will diagnose problems and prescribe and, sometimes, implement solutions. With coaching, the assumption is that individuals are capable of generating their own solutions, with the coach supplying supportive, discovery-based approaches and frameworks.
  • Mentoring: A mentor is an expert who provides wisdom and guidance based on his or her own experience. Mentoring may include advising, counseling and coaching. The coaching process does not include advising or counseling, and focuses instead on individuals setting and reaching their own goals.
Why should I hire a coach?
If you want to take advantage of an opportunity or challenge, feel “stuck” on the path to achieving your goals or simply believe there is something more to discover in your personal or professional life, partnering with a professional coach could benefit you. People hire coaches when they feel the following:
  • To discover what you would like to have more of in your life, this could be personal or professional
  • To create a more balanced life which works well for you and meets all your needs
  • To make decisions that are in alignment with your deepest values and beliefs
  • To be able to accomplish all that you want to accomplish without putting things off or waiting for the ‘right time’
